About the Championship Dog ShowThe Border Union Championship Dog Show may be young, but it has a character all of its own.For a number of years a Dog Show was a feature of the Border Union Agricultural Show, held in July. Members of the Canine Section Committee lead by the late Mrs Margaret Lyndesay Smith as Chairman, with the late Jean Cook as Secretary, saw the opportunity to bring a Show of Championship status to the Borders and after Kennel Club approval, the first Championship Show was held on 8th August 1975. The Show is held at a magnificent location. Springwood Park is adjacent to the world famous Junction pool of the rivers Tweed and Teviot. From the showground Kelso Abbey can be seen as well as Floors Castle and the unique five arch bridge that was built as a model for the original Waterloo Bridge in London. The town centre is within easy walking distance. The use of caravans by exhibitors is encouraged and every effort is made to make their stay pleasant. Kelso has all major amenities including supermarkets, petrol stations, chemists, banks, pubs, a veterinary surgeon and a medical centre. A social evening is held in the permanent building with entertainment, dancing and a bar. For exhibitors coming on the two days of the Show, parking is close to the benching tents. The number of dogs entered has fluctuated in recent years but there are generally somewhere between 6000 and 7500 entries. Sections include working, pastoral, utility, toy, gundog, hound and terrier.
